At Writing Voices we're proud to help make talented voices heard!
We are now open to external submissions. We often put out calls for submissions on specific themes - check out our social media channels to find out if we're looking for something specific right now.
We accept submissions from all writers - it doesn't matter to us whether you've been published before or not. If you've got a great literary voice and write to a high standard, we want to hear from you.
Please read our submission guidelines and FAQ below carefully before sending us your work.
Here's what you need to know:
What are we looking for:

Poetry

Fictional prose of no more than three 3,000 words

Memoir, autofiction and personal essays of no more than 3,000 words

Writing life pieces, which provide insight and learning into being or becoming a writer

Got something else? Pitch it to us!
What you should send us:

A brief summary of your submission

The final draft of your submission in a Word or Google Docs document

Your full name or official pen name
-
A 50 word author bio
-
A link to your (non-private) social media account* if you'd like us to tag you or promote
If you have an online social profile to promote yourself as a writer, this is your chance to share that link with our readers.
Some important notes on rights:

You must own all publication rights to any work submitted to Writing Voices and it must be your own work. That includes any original imagery you submit with the piece.

You will continue to own the rights to your work. By submitting a piece to us, you are giving us permission to display it on our blog and social media channels.

We carry out a plagiarism check on all pieces which are considered for our blog.
The final few things to bear in mind:

Submissions must be in English

You must be 18 or over to submit to Writing Voices

We reserve the right to make minor editorial adjustments, or to request a redraft with more extensive editorial feedback

We will attempt to give feedback where we can when a piece is rejected; however, due to time constraints, this is not always possible

Writing Voices will accept no responsibility for your work or the views expressed in your work

You may not create your own branded Writing Voices graphics to promote a published submission

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a resident writer?Positions as resident writers are by invitation only. We are not currently accepting applications.

When will I know if my submission was accepted?We aim to respond to submissions within two weeks. Please don't chase us!

Will you tell me why my submission was rejected?Submissions may be rejected for a number of reasons including: - Quality - Whether we feel the piece is a good fit for our blog - Whether your piece clashes or overlaps with a piece which has previously been published on our blog or which is in our content queue. - How closely your piece fits our submission criteria While we do try to provide feedback where we can, this is not always possible.

Can I re-publish work belonging to me, published on Write Yorkshire?"You retain ownership of your piece and may re-publish. We request that you wait a minimum of 30 days after your piece has been published to our blog. We also encourage reposting to Medium, but ask that you re-publish by importing the content from our website in the correct manner.

Can I re-submit a rejected submission?If we are interested in a piece but don't feel it's quite ready or right for our blog, we may invite you to resubmit your piece with some editorial changes. Unless you're explicitly invited to resubmit, please don't send the same piece twice.

Who owns the rights to my work once I have sent it to you?Write Yorkshire will not own your work - you retain full ownership. By submitting work to us, you are granting us permission to display your work without time limit.

If my submission is accepted, when will it be published?"If your submission was accepted we will let you know if minor editorial changes have been made and when your piece is scheduled for publication on our blog.
